More than Entertainment, Sports Have The Power To Heal Sports have an innate healing power. Watching the sports provides us an escape from the everyday hassles of life, if only for a couple hours. Sometimes, sports can mean much, much more. There are moments when sports let us know that a community, city, country can overcome major tragedy and begin to heal. This was true for the first game after 9/11 in Yankee Stadium. And we saw an amazing reaction throughout the sports world the days following the tragedy in Newtown, CT. Yes, they are just games, but their ability to heal is powerful.
Today, the 118th running of the Boston Marathon takes place. It is an event that was always a celebration in Boston and the entire New England region. Because of the tragic events of last year’s race, the entire country’s eyes will be on the Marathon today, not only to remember the individuals who lost their lives and the many who suffered life changing injuries, but to utilize the healing power that sport provides. For the 36,000 runners, crossing the finish line on Boylston Street in Copley Square will be an overpowering emotional moment…a collection of healing moments that will be shared byt everuone in Boston and by the rest of us as well.
